Vocational Inclusion Programme (VIP)

Description

The VIP Programme is provided for KS 4 students for whom the traditional GCSE model is inappropriate and offers an alternative option choice at the end of KS 3.  Students are out of school for part of their week, undertaking a work placement for one or more days per week and, where appropriate, a recognised course of study (NVQ or equivalent) at a college or training provider’s premises for one day a week.  Opportunities for work-based training and assessment are also possible for students who would benefit.

The most usual model for this programme involves students remaining in school for 3 days a week, studying for a reduced number of key GCSEs.  However, the programme is designed to be flexible in order to meet the needs of individual students and, as a result, some students may benefit from extended work placements.

The EBP identifies an appropriate work placement that supports the students’ course of study.  Whilst the duty of care remains with the schools, the EBP monitors and follows up attendance at college or training provider and the work placement, notifying the school of any absence.

EBP staff are assigned a ‘case load’ of students whom they support, mentor, monitor and review throughout the 2 years of the programme.  The EBP VIP Coordinators also have a crucial role in developing and maintaining productive relationships with employers, college staff, trainers and parents.

Aims, objectives and learning outcomes

The VIP programme aims to enable students to achieve skills and capabilities in an alternative learning environment.  By reducing the number of GCSEs and offering different experiences than are possible in school, students will be more able to reach their individual potential.  Specific learning outcomes will vary for individuals, with the main drivers being the development of skills, attributes and attitudes that will lead to further education at 16+ and / or employment.
